A collection of 24 books from The Miss Harker School Library with copyrights ranging from 1887 to 1928, many with inscriptions from donors, and Catherine Harker’s name written on the inside cover, in her own hand. Of interest are Sir Walter Scott’s “Christmas in the Olden Times”, c.1887, “A Treasury of War Poetry”, edited by George Herbert Clarke, c. 1919, John Muir’s “The Boyhood of a Naturalist”, c. 1913, and Will Irwin’s “Herbert Hoover, A Reminiscent Biography”, c.1928, with an inscription donating the book to Catherine “from the book fund given by the girls, Christmas, 1928”.
Five Miss Harker’s School textbooks that belonged to alum Gloria Brown (1942-45) (see Series 4). Titles include Literature and Life, Smith’s First Year Latin, English Literature, World Literature, and National Governments and International Relations.
A photocopy of the 1930 yearbook entitled Tongues in Trees. Of interest are senior pictures, senior wills, pictures of the junior, sophomore, and freshman classes, and social calendar for the previous year.
The Echo yearbook, 1952. Commemorates the fiftieth anniversary of Miss Harker’s with a dedication to Catherine Harker, Sara D. Harker, and their mother, Sara E. Harker. This copy belonged to 7th or 8th grader Terry Anne McGee, and includes signatures and handwritten messages to her from several P.A.M.A. cadets, including “Don Nichols.” Additional “The Echo” yearbooks for the years 1947 to 1952. The yearbooks contain variations on the following: dedication, photos with name identification of faculty, Echo staff, student council, student body (upper, junior high, intermediate), sports and sorority and individual photos of seniors, senior prophecies, wills, memories, essays and poems; advertisements sponsoring the yearbook.
History of Art, 1916, Miss Harker’s School. Ruth Brunn, 1916 graduate, prepared this book for her course on art history, taken in her senior year. Contains photographic copies of the artwork studied, with Miss Brunn’s handwritten notes on each adjacent page. This was gifted to the school in 1979 by her sister.
