General
Arranged by subject, and chronologically within files.
Includes brochures, an advertisement, and rosters produced by the school. Additional lists of students and graduates can be found in the oak cabinet (see Series 6). The three brochures 1928, 1932, 1943, and one post-1950 describe the school facilities and programs.
“Corporation Minutes” of the Miss Harker’s School, 1913-1914, plus minutes of one meeting from May, 1915, which is noted as the only meeting of the school year. The meeting was called by Miss Sara, with Sarah E. and Catherine attending. It was at this meeting that Miss Sara first proposed the idea of incorporation. Sara also threatened to withdraw from the school at once, because it was “useless to attempt to try to work harmoniously together with no intercourse save that that was held at the meetings.” She made her continued involvement in the school contingent upon splitting the school into “three separate and distinct departments maintained under three separate and distinct heads.” She proposed that Catherine principal of the High School, Mrs. Harker (Sarah E.) be principal of the Lower School, and Miss Sara be principal of the Music School. However, discussion revealed the likely withdrawal of a Miss Campbell from the school if this reorganization took place, so the proposition failed.
Minutes of the Miss Harker School Board of Directors 1915-1953 are contained in a bound journal, hand-written by the various secretaries of the institution until September of 1937, after which they were typewritten. There are no minutes from July 1947 to November 1952. There are other shorter lapses in the minutes; it is unclear whether the board met during these times. The minutes document the many financial and personnel challenges the school faced through those years. There are no minutes after July 7, 1953.
“Bylaws of Miss Harker’s School” contains the Original Articles of Incorporation, dated 1915, and signed by the founding Board of Directors, Sarah E. Harker, Catherine Harker, Sara D. Harker, D. Charles Gardner, Charles D. Marx, John Lee, Jr., and J. S. Hutchinson. Also contains all additional articles through 1955, with corresponding signature changes, which reflect the changing membership of the Board.
Two ledgers contain reports of grades for students for academic years 1919-1937. The 10” x 6.5” ledger contains grades K-8, and the 12” x 8.5” ledger contains the high school reports.
Additional brochures (or Student/Parent Handbooks) that include calendar, faculty & staff information, course descriptions, campus descriptions, student activities, uniform & dress requirements, tuition & fees and alumnae roster for the years 1916, 1931 and 1942.
One bound School Register ledger includes:
May 1934 - student names and Record of Standing and Report of Work Accomplished
Sept. 1935 to June 1940 – Attendance Records
Inside cover includes loose student report cards for the years 1943(5), 1944(11) and 1945(1).
